Crooked Chapeli

Got nothing to do with his coaching India ! Rewind to the past and you will come across this incident in the Kerry Packer World Series match against New Zealand..
The story that is about to unfold is that of the Notorious underarm delivery bowled by Trevor Chappell on the advice of his elder brother the crooked Chapeli, Greg Chappell..

Date - 1st of February, 1981.
Venue- Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Series- Third final of the 5 finals of World series - Benson and Hedges cup.
Match Situation - New Zealand needs 6 runs off the last ball of the match, to tie the match.

Then Australian Captain - Greg Chappell comes to his bowler - Trevor Chappell and asks him to bowl an under-arm delivery..all along the pitch so that there is absolutely no chance for the No. 10 New Zealand batsman - Brain McKechine to get under the ball and hit a six. This action was technically legal, but seen as being against the spirit of the game.

Actually, in the confusion before the final ball was bowled, one of the fielders, Dennis Lillee, forgot to walk into place, meaning that the underarm ball was technically a no-ball, because Australia had one too many fielders outside the field restriction line..

New Zealand needed six runs to tie the match from the final ball, with eight wickets down. Greg Chappell, the Australian captain, ordered the bowler (his brother Trevor) to bowl underarm, rolling the ball along the ground to prevent the No. 10 New Zealand batsman (Brian McKechnie) hitting a six from the last ball to tie the match, which would have meant playing more matches to decide the series. This, at the time, was within the laws of cricket, but perceived as unsportsmanlike.
As the ball was being bowled, Ian Chappell (older brother of Greg and Trevor, and a former Australia player) who was commentating on the match, was heard to call out "No, Greg, no, you can't do that" in an instinctive reaction to the incident, and he remained critical in a later newspaper article on the incident.

Australia won the game, but were booed off the field by spectators. The New Zealand batsmen walked off in disgust, McKechnie throwing his bat to the ground in frustration.

It was an embarrassing incident nevertheless ..Chappell's  career will always be tainted by this incident, all his other achievements will not come into picture when his name is taken..
What a game of cricket, what a game of cricket, one delivery remaining, and now a six can only tie the game. And the fellow with the job of trying to do a job on it is McKechnie, and there hasn't been a big hit on this ground during this game, and I very much doubt now whether New Zealand can draw level with Australia. Now the umpire's conferring, I couldn't imagine why. The conference is following a discussion they had with Greg and Trevor Chappell, so maybe there's something wrong with the ball, I can't think why. I think he wants to bowl underarm, he wants to bowl underarm.Well, I don’t want to comment on it, it's the end of the game.
