Necessity is the mother of invention. The same also applies to the Twenty20 format of cricket. The idea of a shortened format of the game at a professional level was discussed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) first in 1998 and then subsequently in 2001. When the Benson & Hedges Cup ended in 2002, the ECB needed another one-day competition to fill its place.. The audience turn out in the various county games had dipped and the ECB were looking out for some means to set it right.. A test match would take 4 or 5 days , an entire day would go in watching an ODI (whis is a 40 overs a side affair in England), so in order to compete with all the other games which at most lasts for 2 hours only, the ECB had to think of a shorter format to pool in the audience in a football frenzy country...
The cricketing authorities were looking to boost the game's popularity with the younger generation in response to dwindling crowds and reduced sponsorship. It was intended to deliver fast paced, exciting cricket accessible to thousands of fans who were put off by the longer versions of the game. Stuart Robertson, the marketing manager of the ECB, proposed a 20 over per innings game to county chairmen in 2001 and they voted 11-7 in favour of adopting the new format. A media group was invited to develop a name for
the new game and Twenty20 was the chosen title.
The first official Twenty20 matches were played on June 13, 2003 between a variety of English counties in the Twenty20 Cup. The first Twenty20 game at Lord's was held on July 15, 2004 between Middlesex and Surrey. It attracted a huge crowd the largest audience for any county cricket game since 1953.
The success of the Twenty 20 cup county cricket tournament in England sparked off a huge interest in this new form of cricket and exhibition matches for Twenty 20 cricket were held throughout the world.
Since then, Twenty20 spread across the world with Australia and South Africa embracing it before the other ICC Test playing nations. India was, in fact, among the last ICC Test nation to adapt and adopt the Twenty20 format.
Domestic Twenty 20 cricket tournaments are being announced by almost every cricket team in the world on their annual cricket calendars. Twenty 20 cricket is exciting and fun and the Stanford 20/20 cricket tournament was probably the key tournament in bringing back West Indies fans to cricket stadiums and perhaps a factor in the rejuvenation of West Indies cricket.

The format has not only given a diversity of spectators to the game of cricket but also catered for a new generation of players. Twenty20 format could bring a breed of players who rely more on the enormity of their willow than the precision of timing – one who charges the bowler every second ball in pursuit of a double-digit run rate.
